Russian sprinter holds off American Caleb Dressel for title.
Russian star and Trojan great Vladimir Morozov claimed one of the glamour races at the 2018 FINA World Championships on Friday (Dec. 14), holding off American star Caleb Dressel to win the 50m free while his former teammate Katinka Hosszu won her third gold, capturing the 100m IM.
Morozov, third in the semifinals, won the sprint final in 20.33, the fastest time in the world this year, while Dressel took silver in 20.54. Morozov also won silver as part of Russia's 4x50m free relay and now has four medals this week. Morozov was also faster than Dressel in the leadoff of the relay, 20.39 to 20.43.
The Hungarian Hosszu also has four medals after winning the 100m IM in 57.26. She took fourth in the 200m back on Thursday with a 2:01.99.
American Kendyl Stewart earned her second relay gold thanks to her prelim swim in the mixed 4x50m medley relay that earned the top seed in the final, a race the U.S. ultimately won. She just missed a spot in the 50m fly final, finishing ninth in the semifinals (25.66) on Thursday.
Santo Condorelli, swimming for Italy, won a bronze as the leadoff (21.27) in the Italians' 4x50m free relay that finished third Thursday.
American Haley Anderson finished seventh in the 800m free final on Thursday (8:18.70) and was 12th in the 400m free prelims Friday (4:05.89).
Dylan Carter, swimming for Trinidad and Tobago, was ninth after the semifinals of the 50m back on Wednesday (23.19), 0.01 out of eighth. But he got a berth into the final Thursday after a scratch from Chinese swimmer Xu Jiayu and finished seventh in 23.44. He also earned a spot into Saturday's 50m fly final, finishing sixth in the semifinals (22.62).
Incoming freshman Aela Janvier of Canada finished 18th in the 200m back in 2:09.97 while former Trojan Robert Glinta was 12th in the 50m back semifinals (23.25).
