Just two days into the 2018 FINA World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and the Trojans have already amassed an impressive medal count, led by Hungary's Katinka Hosszu with two golds and a silver, a pair of relay medals for Russia's Vladimir Morozov and another relay medal for American Kendyl Stewart.
Hosszu earned the first medal for the USC contingent by winning the 400m individual medley in 4:21.40 on Tuesday, defending her 2016 crown. She turned in another successful title defense on Wednesday, coming from behind on the final 50 to win the 200m fly in 2:01.60, 0.13 ahead of American Kelsi (Worrell) Dahlia. Hosszu returned later Wednesday to earn silver in the 100m back in 56.26, just 0.07 back of American Olivia Smoliga.
Morozov claimed his first medal of the championships as part of Russia's men's 4x100m free relay that took silver, finishing 0.08 back of the U.S. team led by USC Head Coach Dave Salo. Morozov's 45.06 split was best of the final. On Wednesday, he earned silver as part of Russia's mixed 4x50m free relay, leading off with a 20.75. Stewart earned a gold medal thanks to her prelim fly leg on the women's 4x50m medley relay. She helped the U.S. take the top seed and the finals relay quartet went on to win gold.
Santo Condorelli has raced on a pair of Italian relays that swam in the finals. He led off Italy's fourth-place men's 4x100m relay that finished 0.05 out of first on Tuesday and swam today on Italy's seventh-place mixed 4x50m free relay. Incoming freshman Aela Janvier also swam in the prelims of that event for Canada.
Dylan Carter, swimming for Trinidad and Tobago, finished 12th in the prelims of the 200m free (1:43.74) while Cristian Quintero of Venezuela was 19th (1:45.24).
Anika Apostalon, competing for the Czech Republic, made the semifinals of the 100m free, where she finished 12th in 53.14. Hungarian Robert Glinta made it through to the finals of the 100m back on Wednesday, taking eighth (50.36) after prelims and semifinals on Tuesday.
American Haley Anderson qualified for the 800m free final tomorrow after finishing seventh in prelims in 8:19.52.
