USC Women Win Nailbiter With 62-61 Comeback Over Fresno State
November 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans stay perfect with a tough win to go to 7-0 overall.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team kept its perfect record intact with a gutsy nailbiter that saw Mariya Moore hit what would be the game-winner with 5 seconds left. That secured a 62-61 USC victory over visiting Fresno State at Galen Center. USC is now 7-0 overall, while Fresno State goes to 3-2.
USC overcame a poor showing at the free-throw line (10-of-23) with a 47.9 percent effort from the floor. Fresno State was a perfect 10-of-10 from the line, and wound up shooting 39.7 percent from the floor. USC landed six 3-pointer to edge out five from the Bulldogs, and the Trojans won out on the boards 34-30.
USC was led by Minyon Moore's 15 points and seven rebounds along with four assists. Mariya Moore — the provider of the winner — finished up with 12 points to go with five assists. Aliyah Mazyck was next with eight points and four steals for the Trojan cause, while Kayla Overbeck and Asiah Jones owned the paint with seven points and six rebounds apiece. Fresno State was paced by Candice White's game-high 22 points, with Kristina Cavey added 13 and Maddi Utti scoring 12 for the Bulldogs.
USC got out of the gates hot, storming to a 7-0 lead before Fresno State issued a response. The score snarled up even at 13-13 and 15-15, with Mariya Moore and Cheyanne Wallace providing equalizers for the Trojans, but the Bulldogs would rally and score the final eight points of the quarter to lead it 23-15. The Trojans would fight back in the next stretch, thanks to the nation's hottest-handed 3-point shooter in Shalexxus Aaron. She'd bury back-to-back threes to follow a bucket from Asiah Jones, and USC was up 26-25 with 3:50 on the clock. The see-saw battle continued, as Fresno State tugged back into the lead. A score from Minyon Moore cut it to a one-point margin, and then Aliyah Mazyck followed a Bulldog bucket with a game-tying three to snarl it at 31-31 entering the final minute of the half. Fresno State had the final word, though, getting to the line for two good tosses to take a 33-31 lead at halftime.
The teams stayed toe-to-toe in the third as USC brought up three more ties but couldn't edge ahead. A 3-pointer from Mariya Moore was a key boost, tugging the Trojans within one, down 44-43 with 3:50 on the clock. Minyon Moore kicked it up a notch and scored six straight points for the Trojans, locking it up at 47-47 on a fast break finish and then at 49-49 with a score off a steal. By the end of the frame, though, USC was still a step behind, trailing 53-52 on the way into the fourth. That's where things heated up further. Two more tie-ups ensued, and then USC managed to pull off its first lead since the second quarter after free throws fell from the hands of Jones and Minyon Moore. Moore's 2-for-2 outing at the line took USC ahead 60-59 with 1:59 to go. Fresno State fired back with two of its own — staying perfect from the stripe — to go back up 61-60 entering the final minute. A huge hustle play from Mariya Moore forced a Bulldog turnover and a foul, putting the ball in USC hands with 18 seconds on the clock. Moore took it into her own hands next, dropping a jumper with 5 seconds remaining to give USC a 62-61 advantage. After a Fresno State miss, Jones hauled in the rebound and was fouled with 0.4 seconds left. Her free throws were off the mark, and Fresno State had the ball on the sideline with 0.1 on the clock. The pass got in, but the shot was after the buzzer, and USC emerged victorious.
Next up for USC is a trip to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in a 5 p.m. contest on Saturday (Dec. 1).
