Suppa pulls into tie for 3rd after season-best 67.
Senior Justin Suh posted his second straight 5-under 67 to take over first place while junior Kyle Suppa matched the effort, leading No. 8 USC to within two strokes of first after the second round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga., on Saturday (Oct. 20).
USC, eight back after the first round, pulled to within two strokes after a second round 8-under 280 and now sit at 18-under 558 (278-280). Clemson took over first at 20-under 556 while Wake Forest is a shot back. Round one header and host Georgia Tech is a shot back of USC.
Suh, who just took over the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Golf Rankings this week,
is looking for his first win as a senior after five as a junior and will enter the final round at 10-under 134 (67-67) with a two-stroke lead.
He opened with a 4-under front 9 to go with a 1-under back and now has five rounds in the 60s this season in eight outings to go with his two top 10 finishes this fall. He had 21 rounds under 70 a season ago.
Suppa's first-round 70 was a season-best and he bettered it today with a six-birdie, one-bogey round to pull into a tie for third at 7-under 137 (70-67).
Sophomore Kaito Onishi is tied for 28th at even 144 (70-74) after a 2-over second round. Junior Cheng Jin is tied for 40th at 2-over 146 (74-72) following a par round that round saw three birdies in a a row between 10 and 12. Freshman Charlie Reiter is tied for 47th at 3-over 147 (71-76).
Action at the Golf Club of Georgia concludes Sunday, USC teeing off at 7:20 a.m. PT with Clemson and Wake Forest.
