Boatwright Named To the Preseason Malone Watch List

USC senior Bennie Boatwright was one of 20 players to be named to the preseason watch list for the Karl Malone Award as the nation's top power forward, it was announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today (Oct. 18). The award is named after the Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
"We are privileged to annually present an award bearing the name of Karl Malone, a truly gifted player and exemplary teammate," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "The young men on the watch list for this, and other awards in the Naismith Starting 5, should be extremely proud, and we look forward to watching them compete throughout the upcoming season."
Boatwright averaged 13.6 points and 6.4 rebounds in 23 games last season, before an injury cut short his season. He had three double-doubles during the season, including three games with 11 rebounds. Boatwright scored a career-high 33 points and made a career-best six three-pointers vs. New Mexico State in the Diamond Head Classic championship game on Dec. 25, 2017 to lead USC to the title, and earn tournament MVP honors. He will enter the season 22 points shy of 1,000 career points scored. Boatwright has been named a USC team captain for the third consecutive season.
By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Karl Malone Award will be narrowed to 10. In March, five finalist will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, Calif. on April 12, 2019.
