National Coming Out Day: Sam Lewis' Story
October 11, 2018 | Men's Volleyball, Features
USC sophomore middle blocker and USA Volleyball Men's Junior National Team captain Sam Lewis is a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court. He is also an openly-gay student-athlete. October 11 is National Coming Out Day, and today, Lewis is sharing his "coming out story" and his journey of learning to love the person he is.
As a 6'10, multiracial, gay athlete, Lewis has many descriptors, but as he grew up, he never found an individual to identify with. Today, Lewis wants to be a relatable figure that those struggling to find someone to identify with can look to.
"I want to be that next generation," said Lewis. "I want to be that next athlete, that next influencer that people can look at and say, 'That's who I want to be. I like him. I identify with him.'"
