The Women of Troy have advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal round in each of the last two seasons
GRAND LAKE, Colo. – The USC women's lacrosse team received 436 points and was ranked No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason coaches top-25 poll on Monday, Jan. 29.
The Women of Troy—two-time defending conference champions of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation—will play in the inaugural season of the Pac-12 in 2018 and start the season ranked in the same place it ended 2017 following the second of back-to-back NCAA quarterfinal appearances. USC opened 2017 in its highest preseason position (No. 4) in history and reached No. 3, each time to mark the highest a team from the West Coast has ever been ranked.
The 2018 IWLCA coaches poll has been expanded from 20 to include 25 teams across all three NCAA divisions in order to more accurately reflect the growth of the game. The first Division I regular-season poll will be published on February 19. In its inaugural season, the Pac-12 has three teams ranked in the poll's top 25 including USC. Colorado is ranked No. 17 and Stanford is ranked No. 23.
The Trojans open the 2018 campaign on the road at Virginia Tech on February 10 in Blacksburg, Va. USC's second game takes place at LeBard Stadium in Costa Mesa, Calif., as part of the Orange County Lacrosse Showcase. The Women of Troy take on No. 2-ranked Stony Brook (Feb. 16) there and then return to the road for games at No. 15 Notre Dame (Feb. 23) and at No. 11 Northwestern (Feb. 25). The Trojans' first home game at McAlister Field is set for Wednesday, March 7, against No. 6 Boston College—a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinal from Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Defending national champion Maryland received 24 of the 25 first-place votes in the preseason poll and is ranked No. 1, followed by the SBU Seawolves. North Carolina is ranked No. 3 with Penn State (No. 4) and Florida (No. 5) rounding out the top five. BC checks in at sixth with Syracuse at No. 7. Princeton is ranked No. 9 and Navy rounds out the top 10.
In 2017, the Trojans went 18-4 and advance to the program's second-consecutive NCAA quarterfinal game. The Trojans went 8-0 in the MPSF's final season and won the second of back-to-back regular-season and tournament titles.
USC's postseason run was its third straight bid into the NCAA tournament. The Trojans were led by first-team All-American and two-time MPSF Player of the Year Michaela Michael who finished as the program's all-time leader for goals (234), points (305), and draw controls (422). Senior defender Lydia Sutton was named a third-team IWLCA All-American and Kerrigan Miller was chosen as the MPSF's Rookie of the Year. Head coach Lindsey Munday earned her 69th-career victory and guided the program to its highest ranking (No. 3) and second-longest winning streak in school history (12).
