USC Women's Rowing Looking for Walk-On Student-Athletes
September 24, 2017 | Women's Rowing, Features
USC women's rowing will be hosting walk-on tryouts, giving undergraduate students an opportunity to represent the university as a Division I student-athlete. No previous rowing experience is necessary.
"Rowing is a great sport," said Josh Adam, USC women's rowing head coach. "You can walk-on in college and with time and training, a woman can truly reach the pinnacle of the sport in the Olympics. We believe very strongly that a strong walk-on program is critical to our success here at USC."
Senior Chloe Chrysikopoulos joined the team as a walk-on her sophomore year after being encouraged by USC rower and friend Sofie Sobotta. Chrysikopoulos, a former high school varsity soccer, tennis and basketball player found her home with the USC rowing team.
"This team has not only supported me as I've grown as an athlete, but also as a person," said Chrysikopoulos. "The USC rowing team has pushed me emotionally, mentally, and physically in the best ways possible, encouraging me to challenge myself everyday. I've met some of the strongest, most incredible women I know. I've not only found my home but also my family in this program."
Senior Kate Melberg found that the bonds she formed on the team are different from the relationships she has outside of the team.
"Being on an Division I team at USC is an amazing opportunity," said Melberg. "Not only do you gain a new group of friends, but you create a family. My teammates will be my friends for life. This is a unique bond that can only come from being on a sports team."
Informational meetings will be held in the Heritage Hall Lobby Thursday (Sept. 28) at 8 a.m. and Monday (Oct. 3) at 5:30 p.m.
For any questions, contact Coach Melanie Salter, msalter@usc.edu. Filling out the informational questionnaire before attending either of the meetings is also highly encouraged.
