Brandon Holt Wins Oracle ITA Mixed Doubles Title With UCLA Partner

MALIBU, CALIF. — USC sophomore Brandon Holt handled double duty like a champ once again. Out at the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, Holt punched up a place for himself in tomorrow's singles championship match with a straight-set win in the semifinals today, and then topped off the day with victory in the mixed doubles championship, playing alongside Ena Shibahara of rival UCLA.

Holt and Shibahara will both vie for singles crowns tomorrow (Sept. 24) in Malibu. But first, the Trojan and Bruin secured some hardware for themselves in drumming up two more wins in the mixed doubles draw. Holt and Shibahara opened up today's doubles duty by taking down Holt's teammate Tanner Smith and his Duke partner Kaitlyn McCarthy 8-5 in the semis. That got the USC-UCLA duo into the title match, where they cruised to an 8-1 championship decision over NO. 3 seeded Harris and Schretter of Duke and Baylor to claim that trophy.

In singles, No. 2 seeded Holt was up against No. 3 seed Johannes Schretter — whom he'd face in the mixed doubles final later — of Baylor to decide the ticket to the title match. After claiming a tiebreak win in the first, Holt dug in and was in complete control in the second to finish off a 7-6 (1), 6-0 victory that launches the Trojan freshman into the final tomorrow. There he'll face an upset-minded Victor Pham of Columbia, who toppled the top seed today in the semis.
