Trojans Divide And Conquer At Futures And Napa Classic

Laurens Verboven powers through qualifying to reach Futures quarterfinal.
The USC men's tennis team took Northern and Southern California by storm in the Trojans' first action of the 2017-18 season. The breakout performance of the early fall stretch came from junior Laurens Verboven, who surged through qualifying rounds at the F30 Futures event in Claremont, Calif., and grabbed two more main draw wins to reach the quarterfinals.
USC had several Trojans competing at the Futures event, with Verboven and fellow junior Jack Jaede the two Trojans to emerge with four qualifying wins to stake a claim in the main draw. The Belgian and the Aussie, respectively, were two of five Trojans to snag at least a pair of wins in qualifying. Jake DeVine, Tanner Smith and Thibault Forget all won their first and second round matches. After a third-round victory, Forget would tangle with teammate Jaede in the fourth, with the Aussie edging out his French teammate to score a spot in the main draw. There, Jaede dropped a three-setter in the Round of 32 to wrap his run, while Verboven knocked off the No. 6 seed and then took a straight-set win to move in the quarterfinals, where he fell to Brazil's Karue Sell. From there, the Trojans turned their focus to NorCal with a trip to the Napa Valley Tennis Classic at Meadowood. Four Trojans competed in the round-robin event, with Smith, Forget and DeVine making the jump from Claremont to Napa while newcomer Mateusz Smolicki earned his first stripes as a Trojan. All four Trojans went 1-2 in singles play while also pairing up for the first doubles competition of the season. DeVine and Smolicki paired up for two wins and two losses in doubles, while Forget and Smith went 1-1 in doubles play in Napa.
The full slate of individual action around the state continues for the Trojans next week. Brandon Holt will do battle at the Oracle ITA Masters (Sept. 21-24) in Malibu while fellow Trojans Jaede and Verboven compete at the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco (Sept. 22-24).
