Six Trojans Set For Action At US Open
August 22, 2017 | Men's Tennis, Features
USC men’s tennis will be well-represented in New York, with three making their US Open debuts.
USC men's tennis has a grand total of six Trojans lined up for competition at the 2017 US Open, which starts up August 22 with qualifying rounds. There, four Trojans are locked in, while two more Trojans have secured spots in the main draw. Main draw competition runs Aug. 28-Sept. 10.
Of those six Trojans, five were teammates on USC's 2012 NCAA Championship team. The relative outlier is Robert Farah, who has his own national championship credentials in snagging the 2008 NCAA Doubles Championship and then helping to spark USC's run of team titles as a member of the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Championship teams, which included two fellow US Open participants — Steve Johnson and Daniel Nguyen. After Farah graduated, the championship train continued for the Trojans, with Johnson and Nguyen welcoming Ray Sarmiento to the crew for the run to the 2011 title and then adding Yannick Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz for that fourth straight championship in 2012.
Now, the six Trojans — owners of at least two NCAA crowns apiece — will reunite in New York this week. Ray Sarmiento and Daniel Nguyen have scored wild cards into the qualifying rounds, where Germany's Yannick Hanfmann and Ecuador's Roberto Quiroz also have slots by virtue of their respective rankings. Hanfmann is ranked No. 133 in the world in singles as of the latest Aug. 21 ATP rankings, and Quiroz stands at No. 272. Those four Trojans will kick off their US Open qualifying action on August 22 to start their journeys toward the main draw. For Hanfmann, Quiroz and Sarmiento, this 2017 appearance marks their US Open debuts. Nguyen, meanwhile, is making his third US Open appearance but his first in US Open singles after competition in doubles in 2009 and 2016. Nguyen comes into this year's action ranked No. 347 in the world in singles. Just ahead of him is Sarmiento at No. 300 in the land in singles.
Already standing tall in the main draw is Steve Johnson, who lands in both the singles and doubles brackets. Ranked No. 46 in the world in singles and No. 146 in doubles, Johnson has won two ATP singles titles and one doubles title, while also boasting a bronze medal in doubles from the 2016 Olympic Games. Colombian Robert Farah also is slotted for main draw doubles. Farah has claimed 10 ATP doubles titles in his pro career to date and is ranked No. 26 in the world in doubles. He also was a 2016 Olympian, having faced his former teammate and fellow NCAA champ and ITA All-American Johnson in the second round of doubles action in Rio.
