No. 3 Trojans Take Season Opener from UC Davis, 2-1

Goals from Anthony and Jones are the difference in the win.
LOS ANGELES – The No. 3-ranked Trojans open 2017 with a 2-1 victory over UC Davis, getting goals from Alex Anthony and Arlie Jones on the day that the banner for the 2016 National Championship was raised at McAlister Field.
"I thought offensively we were better than we have been. We have been working on it, and we got a chance to show that today," explained head coach Keidane McAlpine. "All in all, we need to be a bit more offensive in the final third and need to be more disciplined in the back and not give up set pieces. We played a very organized UC Davis side today and they did what they needed to do, took advantage of their opportunities and we did not take advantage of enough of ours. Overall, great first game to get us going, but we still have a lot of work to do."
The Trojans (1-0) got on the board first in the 22nd minute, as Alex Anthony finished off a cross from Leah Pruitt far post. Nicole Molen also assisted on the goal.
The Trojans, who dominated possession for most of the first half, outshot the Aggies (0-1) 12-2 in the first half.
In the second half, the Trojans started things off fast, as freshman Arlie Jones, scored just four minutes into the half to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Redshirt freshman defender Samantha Bruder played a nice ball into the far post and Jones was waiting, with a textbook diving header finish for her first goal as a Trojan.
Jones then later added what looked like a second goal on the day, but she was whistled offsides.
The Aggies got on the board in the 57th minute, as the Trojans were whistled for a foul at the top of the 18-yard box. Mandy McKeegan delivered a perfect far-post, upper V strike to make it a 2-1 game.
The Trojans continued to hold possession and generate opportunities through the final 33 minutes of play, but were unable to find the back of the net again. However, they held on to the 2-1 lead to finish game one of the season with a victory.
The Trojans outshot the Aggies 22-4 on the day, led by Pruitt and Anthony who each had four shots on the day. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kaylie Collins made one save and got the win in her first collegiate action.
The Trojans have a bit of a break for the next two weeks, as the team's next contest does not come until Sept. 1 on the road at Missouri.
