Freshmen Tara McKeown and Savannah DeMelo tallied their first collegiate goals.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Two quick second half goals by standout freshmen Tara McKeown and Savannah DeMelo were the difference in the first road contest of the season for No. 7 USC, as the Trojans defeated Missouri 2-0 on Friday night at Walton Stadium.
"We played a really tough Mizzou team tonight," said head coach Keidane McAlpine. I thought they played well tonight. It was not our best performance, but it was good to get a result tonight on the road. We hope to get better as we head into our game on Sunday at Kansas."
After a very physical first half, the Trojans were able to get on the board quickly in the second half, as freshman forward McKeown tapped home a cross from redshirt junior midfielder Sydney Myers just 29 seconds in to the second half. The goal is the first of McKeown's young career in Cardinal and Gold, along with Myers' first career assist.
The Trojans then wasted no more time, as fellow freshman DeMelo added her first career goal off a cross from McKeown in in the 53rd minute to make it a 2-0 game.
From there in the second half the Trojans got back to playing a brand of soccer we are used to seeing them play, possessing the ball and generating more quality chances, as they outshot the Tigers 10-5 in the second half. Overall on the day the Trojans outshot the Tigers 19-12. Both corner kicks for the Trojans came in the second half as well.
In the first half, the Trojans had some quality chances, including an open net opportunity in the sixth minute of play, but Sydney Sladek was unable to capitalize for the Trojans.
The Trojans then weathered two storms defensively around the 36th minute mark, first as goalkeeper Kaylie Collins came up with a huge save on a shot by Mizzou's Kaitlyn Clark from distance, tipping it off the crossbar for a corner kick. Then on the corner kick, a header gets past keeper Collins, but Julia Bingham is there to save it off the line for a team save.
The Trojans were able to hold on in the contest for their first shutout of the season and the first of goalkeeper Collins' career. Collins finished the day with three saves overall.
Next up for the Trojans is a visit to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 3.
