A 67th minute goal by Sydney Sladek was the difference
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The defending national champions wrapped up exhibition play on Sunday night at George Allen Field, where a 67th minute goal by senior midfielder Sydney Sladek was the difference in a 1-0 victory.
The Trojans were tested by the Big West favorites, including being whistled for a penalty kick on a hand ball in the box just two minutes into the match. However, senior goalkeeper Julia Murphy came up with a big stop on the shot to keep the game even, 0-0. In a half of work she finished up with two saves, while freshman keeper Kaylie Collins came up with four massive saves in the second half, especially down the stretch to keep the Trojan lead.
The Trojans settled in nicely in the first half, and in a back-and-forth match, the Trojans outshot the 49ers 4-3 in the first half.
In the second half the Trojans were able to break through in the 67th minute, as Sladek took a pass from freshman Samantha Trinceri and turned, created her shot and finished far post from about 25 yards out to give the Trojans the lead.
The Trojans and their hallmark staunch defense was able to put up another zero over the final 23 minutes, giving the Trojans the 1-0 exhibition victory.
The Trojans are set to head back to McAlister Field to open up the regular season on Friday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. PT vs. UC Davis. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
