Trojans Get 2017 Going in Exhibition Match vs. UC Irvine
August 11, 2017 | Women's Soccer, Features
The Trojans and Anteaters played to a 0-0 tie through 90 minutes of action.
LOS ANGELES – The defending national champions got on the pitch against a different opponent on Friday, hosting UC Irvine in an exhibition contest at McAlister Field. The two squads, playing for the first time in 2017, competed through 90 minutes to a scoreless tie.
Goals of the exhibition game for the Trojans were to get their fitness levels game ready, along with shoring up the team's defense, which has been the hallmark of the program since the arrival of head coach Keidane McAlpine in 2014.
The Trojans did just that, tallying a shutout through 90 minutes behind the play of goalkeepers Kaylie Collins and Julia Murphy, who split time equally in the net, with Collins making two saves and Murphy one. Center back Ally Prisock, a 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy watch lister, held down the back line for the Trojans.
Although both teams tallied seven shots on the day, some of the best scoring opportunities came from Trojan forward Leah Pruitt, who tallied a team-high two shots. Returning forward Alex Anthony also had a nice chip shot opportunity in the first half, catching the keeper well off her line, but the shot trickled wide.
The Trojans will be back in exhibition action on Sunday, traveling to Long Beach State for a 6 p.m. PT match. Then the Trojans come back to McAlister Field to open up the regular season on Friday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. PT vs. UC Davis.
