Tanner Smith & Laurens Verboven Claim Jack Kramer Doubles Crown

It’s the second straight doubles title for the Trojans duo this fall.
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, CALIF. — USC's Tanner Smith and Laurens Verboven have collected their second consecutive doubles title this fall in following up last week's Southern California Intercollegiate crown with the Jack Kramer Collegiate championship this weekend. In the singles draw, USC's Jake DeVine worked his way to the semifinals at the event.
USC had two doubles duos in the mix for this year's Jack Kramer tourney, with Jake DeVine and newcomer Mateusz Smolicki paired up for the first time, while Tanner Smith and Laurens Verboven were back in action alongside one another for another weekend of work. The two Trojan tandems would end up squaring off in the semifinals after DeVine/Smolicki picked up two wins to start things off, and No. 2 seeded Smith/Verboven had a first-round bye before netting a quarterfinal win. The SoCal Intercollegiate champs were able to top their teammates 8-2 in the semis, moving into today's title match against the top-seeded team from Stanford. There, Smith and Verboven dug in, squeaking out an 8-7 (7) win to beat the Cardinal in a tense tiebreaker to claim the doubles championship.
In singles, USC had eight Trojans in action, pushing three through to the quarterfinals. DeVine would have to square off against teammate Verboven on the singles courts as well, with No. 5 seed DeVine pulling off a three-set win over No. 2 seeded Verboven to advance to the semis. Smith, meanwhile, was up against top-seeded Thomas Fawcett of Stanford in the quarters, and the Cardinal was able to hold off the Trojans 7-5, 7-5 to advance. In the semis, DeVine faced No. 4 seed Keegan Smith of UCLA, going three sets in that one as well, but seeing the Bruin post a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 decision to steal a spot in the single final.
