The Women of Troy will appear in the program’s 27th consecutive NCAA tourney and the 35th all-time
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (22-9) was chosen as the 10th seed into the program's 27th consecutive NCAA tournament and will make its 35th overall appearance in the annual tourney. The NCAA's selection committee announced its field of 64 teams on Sunday, Nov. 26, and selected the Trojans with an at-large berth.
The Women of Troy will open their tournament run as first- and second-round hosts at Galen Center and will face Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas (27-4) at 7 p.m. PT on Friday, Dec. 1. In the other first-round match, San Diego (24-4) will take on Louisiana State (20-9) at 5 p.m. The Toreros also played a first-round match at Galen Center in 2015. Winners of the two first-round matches will meet at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, in the second round.
All matches will be streamed or broadcast live and will have live stats provided at USCTrojans.com. Fans can purchase tickets at USCTrojans.com/tickets or by calling (213) 740-GOSC.
The Trojans will meet Central Arkansas for the first time in program history. USC has played LSU three times (twice in 1989 and once in 1992) and owns a 2-1 record over the Tigers. The Women of Troy are 10-1 all-time against San Diego.
Big Ten champion Penn State (29-1) received the No. 1 overall seed. USC is in No. 2-seed Florida's (25-1) portion of the bracket. Pac-12 champion Stanford (26-3) is the No. 3 seed and Kentucky (26-3) is No. 4. The other seeded teams in the Florida bracket are No. 7 Minnesota (26-5) and No. 15 UCLA (19-10). The Pac-12 put nine teams into the tournament including the Trojans, Cardinal, and Bruins. Washington (24-7) is No. 8 and Utah (22-9) is the 11th seed and each will also host first- and second-round matches. The other four teams are Oregon (17-11), Oregon State (21-11), Colorado (22-9), and Washington State (17-15).
The Trojans hold a 122-38 (.763) all-time postseason record and are 76-31 (.710) in the NCAA tournament. USC is the winner of six national championships including the first-ever NCAA title awarded in 1981. The Trojans won back-to-back NCAA crowns under current head coach Mick Haley in 2002 and 2003 and are the holders of three AIAW titles (1976, '77, '80). USC has appeared in all but two of the NCAA's 37 annual championships tournaments (1986, 1990).
Since the NCAA expanded to a field of 64 teams in 1998, the Women of Troy have advanced to 11 regional championship matches, seven national semifinals (final four), and two national finals (both victories). Including the pair of NCAA title runs, USC is 46-14 (.767) in NCAA tournament matches under Haley. Last year, the Trojans received an at-large berth and faced Hawai'i in the opening round in Minneapolis. The Wahine defeated the Women of Troy in five sets to end USC's run in the first round.
The top remaining seed out of each quadrant of the NCAA bracket will host regional semifinals (Dec. 8) and championship matches (Dec. 9) the following week. The national semifinals will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 and 9:30 p.m. ET and the championship match will be played at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.
