Full Slate Of Finals Ahead For Trojans At SoCal Intercollegiate

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — It'll be a noon showdown for Southern California Intercollegiate Championship title tomorrow at Marks Stadium, with Trojans standing tall in both the singles and doubles finals. All the action will play out on USC's home courts at 12 p.m., as two USC doubles teams will square off in that title match while sophomore Brandon Holt looks to hold his ground in the singles final.

USC had a busy stretch of semifinal play today, starting with singles action as Logan Smith, Brandon Holt and Tanner Smith each stepped up to the plate for their respective semis. Logan Smith would go three sets with Azusa Pacific's upset-minded Oliver Frank, falling 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 to miss out on a spot in the title match. Holt and Tanner Smith, meanwhile, had to face off against one another in the semis, guaranteeing a Trojan would play for the crown. It would be Holt who stole that spot, beating the elder Smith 6-0, 6-2 to take that place in tomorrow's final against Frank.

In doubles, both USC pairs in the semifinals would score tickets to the title match. Tanner Smith and Laurens Verboven advanced by way of withdrawal by their BYU opponents. Jake DeVine and Logan Smith would take the court today, locking up a spot in the final with a smooth 8-4 win over San Diego's Holmgren/Keerasuntonpong. The all-Trojan doubles final is set for noon tomorrow (Oct. 30).

Also in action today was USC's Henry Ji, who has been doing work in the singles consolation bracket. Ji kept up his straight-set win streak with a 6-4, 6-1 win over UC Irvine's Bruce Man-Son-Hing today in the consolation semifinals, earning a place in the final, which will go unplayed.
