Trojans Move Two Singles Players, Two Doubles Teams To ITA Regional Quarterfinals

MALIBU, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team is on track for potential all-Trojan title matches with two singles players and two doubles duos through to the quarterfinal rounds out at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu. With Trojan representation on opposite sides of the draws, USC is two wins away from lining up a monopoly on both finals. The first step toward Trojan domination comes tomorrow (Oct. 21) in quarterfinal action our at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

In a busy day of action in Malibu, the singles field was pared down from six to three Trojans after the Round of 32. Thibault Forget, Jake DeVine and Tanner Smith all were ousted in the Round of 32, while Logan Smith, Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven rang up victories to move on to the Round of 16. There, Verboven was upended, but Smith and Jaede prevailed to score spots at opposite sides of the singles bracket for tomorrow's quarterfinals. A finalist in the 2016 even, Logan Smith issued straight-set wins in both matches today to earn a repeat trip to the quarterfinals. Jaede, meanwhile, won in straight sets in the Round of 32 before making an impressive three-set comeback in the Round of 16 to top Pepperdine's own Brian Berdusco 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 to join Smith in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Both Trojans will face Arizona State foes tomorrow.

In doubles, three Trojan teams were in action in today's Round of 16. DeVine and Forget fell to a Waves pair, 8-5, to get knocked out of contention, while two USC pairs made it through. It was a tight one for USC's Logan Smith and Verboven, who outlasted UCLA's Pereira/Rapp in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4) to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals. Jaede and Tanner Smith, meanwhile, made a power move to the quarters with an 8-4 win over Bruins Golberd/Staggs to move on.
