Six Trojans Move Through In Singles & Doubles At ITA Regionals In Malibu

Round of 32 singles play and Round of 16 doubles action comes up tomorrow.
MALIBU, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team has pushed through six Trojans to tomorrow's singles and doubles action out at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu after two rounds of competition today. Tanner Smith and Jake DeVine each nabbed two singles wins today while the rest of the Trojan contingent had byes in the opening round of singles play.
The day began with doubles play, with three USC duos in the mix and locked in with opening byes. All three pairs pinned up decisive wins in the ensuring Round of 32. USC's No. 5 seeded pair of Logan Smith and Laurens Verboven served up a swift 8-1 win in their morning match, while No. 6 seeded Jack Jaede and Tanner Smith drummed up an 8-2 victory. Jake DeVine and Thibault Forget would score a spot in tomorrow's Round of 16 with a solid 8-3 win in the doubles draw this morning.
In singles, Jake DeVine and Tanner Smith each followed up straight-set wins in the opening round with hard-fought wins in the Round of 64. DeVine successfully fended off Pepperdine's own No. 5 seed with a pair of tiebreak wins — 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) — to move on. Meanwhile, Tanner Smith issued a three-set win to advance. He was one of four Trojans who'd go to three sets in the Round of 64. Thibault Forget got past his LMU opponent 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, and Laurens Verboven delivered a powerful blow in his third set to win 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-0 in another matchup against an LMU foe. USC senior Jens Sweaney wasn't so fortunate in his three-setter, though, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to one of the Waves in the draw.
Straight-set victors today were Logan Smith — finalist at this event last year — with a smooth 6-0, 6-3 win over Eric Kenneth of Hawai'i. A similarly powerful win was claimed by Jack Jaede, who topped Antoine Barth of UC Irvine 6-2, 6-1 to move on.
