USC Women's Swimming Takes Day 1 Lead At SMU Classic

Four Trojans win A heats to highlight Friday action.
Four Trojans posted wins in A heats and Troy won another four B heats as the USC women's swimming and diving team took the Day 1 lead after the first night of the SMU Classic in Lewiston, Texas, on Friday (Oct. 13).
USC led after the first day of racing with 168 points and was followed by Louisville (163.5), Michigan (161), UCLA (129.5) Miami (109) and host SMU (106).
USC opened the meet with a third in the 400y medley relay as senior Hannah Weiss, juniors Riley Scott and Maddie Wright and freshman Marta Ciesla posted a 3:36.34.
Freshman Maggie Aroesty took the first individual race with a win in the 400y IM in 4:10.18 while Scott claimed the B heat with a 4:14.96, both NCAA B cuts. Sophomore Tatum Wade followed with a third in the 200y free in 1:46.99 while senior Lexie Malazdrewicz was third in the B (1:46.92), again both B times.
Freshman Marta Ciesla lowered her season best in the 50y free with a winning sprint of 22.63, another B cut. Sophomore Louise Hansson then won one of her specialties, tackling the 100fly in 51.56, 0.37 off an NCAA A cut. Wright won the B race in a B cut of 53.75.
Hansson jumped right back in to take second in the 100y back in 52.79 while Weiss posted another B win with a 53.65.
Scott wrapped the individual races by capturing USC's fourth race with a 59.56 to take the 100y breast while Aroesty took another B race with a 1:00.46, both improving on their NCAA B times.
Sophomore diver Carly Souza was sixth on 1-meter with 205.95.
USC closed the day's racing with a third in the 800y free relay as Wade, Malazadreicz, Wright and Hansson posted a 7:09.92.
The final night of action begins Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
