USC Men's Volleyball Split Squads Beat Hawaii

In a pre-season split squad scrimmage, the USC men's volleyball team defeated Hawaii in simultaneous matches on Thursday (Nov. 5) in the Galen Center Pavilion.
One Trojan squad posted a 26-28, 25-22, 25-17, 29-27 victory, while the other USC team won by a 25-16, 27-25, 14-25, 19-25, 15-13 score.
The team that won 3-1 was composed of Andy Benesh, Tommy Leonard, Jon Rivera, Lucas Yoder, Jack Yoder, Matt Douglas, Blake Markland, Larry Tuileta, Woody Cook and Gert Lisha. The 3-2 victorious team included Michael Mullahey, Alex Slaught, Connor Inlow, Christopher Orenic, Josh Kirchner, Brooks Varni, Vinny Rios, Riley Mallon, Ryan Moss and Tyler Resnick.
The Trojans next host the second annual USC Legends Homecoming Beach Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 6-7) at Merle Norman Stadium.
On Friday and Saturday, current players from the USC men's indoor team and the defending national champion women's beach squad will join such former Trojans as beach legends Tim Hovland and Steve Obradovich, College Players of the Year Bryan Ivie and Tony Ciarelli, All-Americans Bob Yoder, Bill Stetson and Riley McKibbin and current beach pro Geena Urango in the sand tourney. All-American setter and Olympic gold medalist Dusty Dvorak, who led USC to a pair of NCAA titles, will serve as the tourney's Honorary Legend.
Nine teams will begin pool play in the 4-person tournament at 6 p.m. on Friday, with Saturday's single elimination play starting at 1 p.m. and the final slated for 5 p.m. prior to the USC football team's Homecoming game against Arizona in the Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
A ticket for spectators costs $25 daily (it includes a buffet meal).
Hosted by the USC Men's Volleyball Alumni and Boosters Club, proceeds benefit the USC men's indoor and women's beach teams. The men's booster club website is www.uscmensvbboosters.com .
After the beach tourney, the Trojans will continue their pre-season competition by playing at the UCLA SAC Tournament on Nov. 20 and 21. Troy begins its 2016 regular season at the non-conference Penn State Tournament, meeting the host Nittany Lions on Jan. 7 and Ohio State on Jan. 8 before opening MPSF play at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 15.
