Three high school standouts— Sean Morrissey of Huntington Beach (Calif.) High, Lucas Lossone of Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach (Calif.) and Jackson Wedbush of Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.)—have signed letters of intent with the USC men's volleyball program, new Trojan head coach Jeff Nygaard announced today (Nov. 17).
"We are extremely pleased with our newest additions to the USC men's volleyball family," said Nygaard. "All three players come to the team with a history of success at the high school and club level. Sean Morrissey brings athleticism and explosiveness to the outside hitter position, while Lucas Lossone brings much needed height and physicality to the court. Jackson is a great all-around volleyball player with a live left arm."
Morrissey, a 6-5 outside hitter, earned 2015 Orange County Register All-Orange County honorable mention and All-Sunset League first team notice as a junior as Huntington Beach won the CIF Division I and Southern California Division I titles. His Southern California Volleyball Club team won the 2015 U17 Open Junior Olympics and he was named MVP of the All-Tournament team.
Lossone, a 6-7 opposite hitter, made 2015 South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay honorable mention as a junior and the South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay second team as a 2014 sophomore at Redondo Union. He spent his 2013 freshman year playing at South Torrance (Calif.) High. His Southern California Volleyball Club team won the 2015 U17 Open Junior Olympics and he made the All-Tournament team. He also played on the beach, helping Redondo Union win the 2015 Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League High School Beach volleyball boys championship and placing ninth at the 2014 FIVB U17 Beach World Championship in Mexico (with Aidan Brown). His mother, Cica Baccelli of Brazil, was an outside hitter at USC in 1991 and 1992, earning All-American second team and All-Pac-10 first team honors in 1992.
Wedbush, a 6-2 opposite hitter, was a made 2015 South Bay Daily Breeze All-South Bay first teamer as a junior at Mira Costa. His Southern California Volleyball Club team won the 2015 U17 Open Junior Olympics. Also a beach player, he won the 2012 AAU U14 Beach Championship (with Henry Smith).
USC, which has won 4 NCAA titles and been to 14 NCAA Final Fours, is coming off a 19-9 season in 2015 in which it advanced to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament semifinals and finished with a No. 7 national ranking. The Trojans begin their 2016 regular season at the non-conference Penn State Tournament, meeting the host Nittany Lions on Jan. 7 and Ohio State on Jan. 8 before opening MPSF play at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 15.
