All-Trojan Semifinals On Tap At Sherwood Collegiate Cup

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- USC men's tennis is assured a spot in both the singles and doubles title matches at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup with all-Trojan semifinals in store tomorrow in Pacific Palisades. On the singles side, it will be either No. 3 seeded Jonny Wang or No. 6 seeded Roberto Quiroz in the final, with the two seniors squaring off in the semis. Quiroz and Wang will also be on opposite sides of the net for the doubles semifinal. Junior Max de Vroome and senior Quiroz are paired up to go up against teammates Wang and freshman Tanner Smith in the semis tomorrow.
Both Quiroz and Wang pinned up impressive singles quarterfinal wins today to move into the all-Trojan semifinal. Wang topped Baylor's Zsiga in powerful straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, while Quiroz also beat a Bear in Rios with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) straight-set victory.
Doubles play got going today in the Round of 16. USC's sophomore Nick Crystal and freshman Thibault Forget fell in their opening match, but two other Trojan pairs netted first-round wins. Smith and Wang had a bye, while de Vroome and Quiroz ripped through to a 6-1 win over a pair of Bruins. Sophomores Rob Bellamy and Connor Farren also beat out a UCLA duo with a 6-4 decision to move into the quarterfinals later in the day. There, de Vroome and Quiroz would advance when their Baylor opponent withdrew due to injury. Smith and Wang topped another Baylor pair in Benitez/Zsiga 6-3, and Bellamy and Farren would stumble in a tiebreaker in their quarterfinal bout.
