Trojans Show Well At Indoor Opener In Seattle

USC had a strong showing in its opening indoor meet of the season winning four events, setting seven personal bests and freshman Robert Ford setting the school 800m record at the UW Indoor Preview in Seattle, Wash. Today (Jan. 17).
In the women's 60m dash, freshman Ky Westbrook took second with a time of 7.18, .03 seconds behind the winner and .12 seconds faster than any Trojan ran in the 2014 indoor season. Her time was also just .09 seconds off the school record of 7.09 set by Angela Williams in 2002. Westbrook had a time of 7.21 in the prelims, the top qualifying time. Freshman Deanna Hill was fourth in the finals with a time of 7.36 and junior Alexis Faulknor was fifth with a time of 7.40. In the prelims, Faulknor had a PR of 7.30, sophomore Destinee Brown had a PR of 7.38 (also ran 7.47 in the qualifying round), Hill had a time of 7.40 and freshman Gabriella Cantrell ran 7.62. In the men's 60m dash, junior Andre De Grasse was second as he matched his PR set in the preliminary rounds of 6.63. Senior BeeJay Lee was fourth with a time of 6.69, after running 6.71 in the prelims.
Senior Melia Cox took second in the women's 60m HH with a PR of 8.34. She was also second in the prelimiminary rounds with a time of 8.49. Senior Allen Williams was second in the men's 60m HH with a time of 8.09, while freshman Marquis Morris was fourth with a time of 8.13.
USC's women took home the first five spots in the 200m race with redshirt junior Tynia Gaither winning with a meet-record time of 23.62. She was followed in order by Westbrook at 23.94, Cantrell at 23.99, Hill at 24.10 and Brown at 24.25. In the men's 200m, Lee took third with a PR of 21.54, which was the top time by a college runner at the meet.
The women swept the podium in the 400m race, too, as junior Jaide Stepter won with a PR of 53.76, senior Vanessa Jones was second with a time of 54.14 and freshman Kendall Ellis was third with a time of 55.08. All three beat the previous meet record of 55.41 which was set in 2006, and the next closest runner was .53 seconds behind Ellis. Freshman Ricky Morgan won the men's 400m race with a PR of 47.63.
Fellow freshman Robert Ford set the USC 800m record in running 1:52.70 to place second, tops among college runners at the meet. USC records show Carl Trentadue's time of 1:53.9 in 1968 as the previous school standard. Senior Erica Capellino ran in the women' 800m race and placed seventh with a time of 2:15.15. She had the second-fastest time among college runners in the race. Senior Myles Andrews ran in the men's 1-mile race and posted a time of 4:12.45 to take 24th.
In the field events, Faulknor tied for fourth at 19-2.75 (5.86m) and freshman Madisen Richards was seventh at 18-10.00 (5.74m) in the women's long jump. Freshman Dominic Smallwood was sixth in the men's long jump with a leap of 22-9.00 (6.93m).
Cox came back to win the women's triple jump with a jump of 40-1.50 (12.23m). She took just three jumps, with her final jump being all she would need to win. In the men's triple jump, Williams was fourth with a best jump of 46-11.75 (14.32m) and Smallwood was seventh with a top jump of 45-10.00 (13.97m).
In the men's high jump, senior Michael Krone tied for fourth with a clearance of 6-10.75 (2.10m) and freshman Randall Cunningham was sixth with a clearance of 6-8.75 (2.05m). Cunningham didn't enter the competition until 6-8.75 and cleared it in his first attempt, but missed all three attempts at the next height (2.10m).
Sophomore Tanya Sapa was second in the women's shot put with a best mark of 48-5.50 (14.77m) and junior Tera Novy was third with a best throw of 47-11.25 (14.61m). Redshirt freshman Nick Ponzio had a best shot put of 59-5.75 (18.13m) to take third in the men's shot put competition.
