Mitch Irvine had 16 kills, 10 digs and 4 blocks to propel Alberta, Canada's top-ranked collegiate men's volleyball team, to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 victory over No. 9 USC in an exhibition match on Friday (Jan. 4) on the second and final day of a 4-team event in the Galen Center.
Ryley Barnes added 12 kills for the Golden Bears and Jay Olmstead had 11 kills and 8 digs.
For USC, Tanner Jansen had 18 kills, 7 digs and 4 blocks, while Cristian Rivera had 12 kills and 9 digs and Robert Feathers had 11 kills and 6 blocks.
In the day's first match, John Baker had 13 kills and 6 digs while Brandon Lebrock and Jared Moore each added 11 kills to lead No. 12 Cal State Northridge to a 25-16, 25-22, 25- 12 exhibition sweep over British Columbia-Okanagan.
Riley McFarland had 11 kills for BC-Okanagan.
On Thursday (Jan. 3), USC swept BC-Okanagan and Cal State Northridge did the same to Alberta.
Two- time defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season champion USC, which has advanced to the NCAA Final Four 3 times in the past 4 years, now opens MPSF play on Thursday (Jan. 10) at UC San Diego before visiting top-ranked, defending NCAA champ UC Irvine on Friday (Jan. 11).
