Tyler Ortman, a 6-8 opposite hitter from Carlsbad (Calif.) High, has signed a letter of intent with the USC men's volleyball team, Trojan head coach Bill Ferguson announced today (April 19).
"We are thrilled to have Tyler join the Trojan Family," said USC head coach Bill Ferguson. "He is young for his class and has a tremendous upside. Although he played mostly middle blocker in high school, we will look at him at opposite hitter. Our initial plan is to redshirt him next season. He has a great future at USC."
Ortman has 152 kills, 65 blocks, 29 aces and 13 digs through 18 matches as a senior in 2012.
As a 2011 junior, he had 166 kills, 90 blocks, 10 aces and 16 digs while making All-CIF San Diego Section second team, All-Avocado League second team and San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic.
He plays for Shorebreak Volleyball Club, placing fourth at the 2011 Junior Olympics in the 16 Open division.
He joins 6 other talented high school seniors who last fall signed letters of intent for the 2013 season: Michael Mullahey, a 6-5 setter from Loyola High in Los Angeles (Calif.); Brooks Varni, a 6-0 libero from Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.); Christopher Orenic, a 6-3 outside hitter from Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.); Alex Slaught, a 6-5 outside hitter from Loyola High in Los Angeles (Calif.); Josh Kirchner, a 6-6 middle blocker from Hamilton High in Sussex (Wisc.); and Tommy Leonard, a 6-8 middle blocker from Barrington (Ill.) High.
