The Classic @ SMU Day 1 Results
The No. 5 USC men's swimming and diving team, led by sophomore Dimitri Colupaev's win in the 200y free and his help in 400y medley and 800y free relay victories, finished in second after the first day of the six-team 2012 The Classic @ SMU on Friday (Jan. 13) at Perkins Natatorium on the SMU campus in Dallas.
The Trojans finished with 148 points, back behind only No. 4 Michigan (165). No. 13 Florida was third (139.50), No. 16 North Carolina was fourth (128), host SMU was fifth (125.50) and No. 20 Purdue was sixth (113).
In the uniquely scored event, each squad is allowed eight swimmers and one diver. Each swimmer can race in three events per day (in either a consolation or championships heat), though one of those events has to be a relay.
USC's 400y medley relay opened the event with a win as junior Alex Lendrum and sophomores Colupaev, Chase Bloch and Vladimir Morozov won in 3:11.56, 0.51 ahead of second-place Michigan. Morozov's 42.02 final 100 brought back USC from behind.
Colupaev posted USC's only individual victory Friday by claiming the 200y free in 1:35.56, 1.21 ahead of Michigan's Daniel Madwed. Freshman Chad Bobrosky was second in the consol heat (1:37.71).
In the 400y IM, senior Will Orlady was fourth (3:55.91) in the final while sophomore Jack Wagner was third in the consol (3:55.06). Orlady was also fourth in the 100y breast (57.38) consol.
Morozov was disqualified from the championship heat of the 50y free due to a flinch at the start. But senior Jeff Daniels won the consol heat in 20.22, a time that would have won the top heat. Morozov came back to take second in the 100y breast with a season-best 54.84, just 0.15 out of first.
Bloch was fourth in the top final of the 100y fly (48.47) while Daniels was fourth in the consol (50.36). Lendrum took second in the 100y back (48.39) while Wagner was second in the consol final (50.43). Freshman diver Jordan Gear took sixth on 1-meter (283.65).
Troy wrapped up the first day by edging the Wolverines in the 800y free relay. USC's Colupaev, Lendrum, Wagner and Bobrosky won in 6:29.20, 1.14 ahead of Michigan. Bobrosky's 1:36.73 final leg clinched the win.
Action concludes Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
