Johnson Moving Through U.S. Open In Mixed Doubles

USC senior Steve Johnson is getting a feel for all realms of the pro circuit, having made his U.S. Open debuts in singles, doubles and now mixed doubles. The Trojans is paired up with former Georgia Tech star Irina Falconi for mixed doubles play, and the duo recently punched up an upset win to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals at the prestigious U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The American pair of Johnson and Falconi first took down Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) / Horia Tecau (ROU) with a smooth 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. In today's second round, Johnson and Falconi served up an upset of the No. 2 seeded team with a gutsy performance in a 10-game pro set to decide the match, beating Katarinka Srebotnik (SLO) / Daniel Nestor (CAN) with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win. That impressive victory sets Johnson/Falconi on a path to the quarterfinals. There, they will face the Czech team of Lucie Hradecka / Frantisek Cermak tomorrow (Sept. 4) at the action at the U.S. Open.
Another Trojan now with a U.S. Open match win to his name is Colombian native Robert Farah. Team up with countryman Juan Sebastian Cabal, Farah tacked up a first-round men's doubles win when he and teammate Cabal beat Americans Jeff Dadamo and Austin Krajicek (USA) 7-6 (2), 6-4. Farah and Cabal lost in the second round reached, falling to Paul Hanley (AUS) / Dick Norman (BEL) 6-2, 6-3.
