USC sixth-year swimming coach Dave Salo, who guided the women's and men's programs to third and seventh-place NCAA finishes, respectively, in 2011, was selected as a 2012 U.S. Olympic women's swim team assistant coach, USA Swimming announced Thursday (Sept. 1).
Salo, who earlier this summer received a five-year contract extension with the Trojans, will team with the women's head coach Teri McKeever, a former USC All-American who is now the head coach at Cal. In addition to Salo, Tim Murphy has been tabbed as the U.S. Open Water Coach while Bob Bowman was added to the men's staff.
"We are thrilled to add Tim Murphy, Bob Bowman and Dave Salo to our 2012 Olympic coaching staff," said Frank Busch, USA Swimming's National Team Director. "We are incredibly fortunate to have coaches of this caliber in the U.S. and we look forward to a successful Olympic Games under their expert guidance."
Next year's Olympic Games will also mark Salo's third time on the U.S. Olympic coaching staff. Salo served as a women's assistant coach in 2000 and a men's assistant coach in 2004. In 2008, Salo was a part of Tunisia's Olympic coaching staff and helped guide Trojan Ous Mellouli to a gold medal in the 1500m free.
Salo was also the U.S. men's head coach at the 2005 World Championships (men) and the 2001 Goodwill Games (men). His assistant coaching duties also include the 2010 Short Course World Championships (women), 2003 World Championships (men and women), 2002 Pan Pacific Championships (men) and the 1999 Pan American Games (women).
Salo has coached numerous Olympic champions and medalists, including former Trojans Rebecca Soni, Mellouli, Lenny Krayzelburg and Gabe Woodward as well as Aaron Peirsol, Amanda Beard, former Trojan assistant coach Staciana Stitts, Colleen Lanne and Jason Lezak.
