USC's 2011 NCAA singles champion Steve Johnson has been bouncing around the country during a power run through summer action, but the Trojan has a home stand set up for this week. Johnson has scored a wild card into the main draw of the Farmers Classic, held July 26-31 at UCLA's LA Tennis Center.
Johnson goes up against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller in the first round of the main draw on Tuesday afternoon. A win would put the soon-to-be-senior up against the tournament's top seed, Mardy Fish, who has a bye for the first round of action. If you can't get to Westwood to see Johnson and the rest of the draw live, follow along online at farmersclassic.com.
Johnson is one of a pile of Trojans -- all 2011 NCAA Championships as members of the USC squad that won its third straight national crown -- who are sprinkled around the globe playing tournaments far and wide. Daniel Nguyen and Michael Grant have been taking the world by storm, seeing action in Spain and France before returning stateside recently. More international action came in the form of Davis Cup competition, where Johnson served as a practice partner to the USA squad while Jaak Poldma represented his home country of Estonia and Emilio Gomez did the same for Ecuador. Former Trojan Cecil Mamiit competed for the Philippines, and USC women's assistant coach West Nott played for the Pacific/Oceania team.
