Trainer is among three Trojans sitting at 2-under 140 (74-66). He came back from a 3-over first round with a 5-under second that included six birdies between the 7th and 14th holes, good for a season-best round.
Kang's 2-under day (71-69) featured three birdies early in his first round (offset by three back 9 bogeys) and a four-birdie second round.
Smith (72-68) had three birdies and four bogeys in the first round, which preceded a sharp second round that saw him with three birdies and no bogeys.
Sophomore T.J. Vogel is tied for 49th at 7-over 149 (76-73) while freshman Ramsey Sahyoun, playing individually, is tied for 32nd at 4-over 146 (74-72).
