USC freshman Madeline Rosenthal has picked up the first conference honors of her career in being named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week. Rosenthal scored back-to-back goals during a five-goal USC scoring run that pulled the Trojans out of a halftime tie with San Jose State on Saturday. She also had two steals and earned two ejections for the Trojans to set up 6-on-5 opportunities in USC's eventual 13-10 win over the Spartans, which wrapped up the regular season with a home victory for the Women of Troy.
Rosenthal is the second USC freshman to be named MPSF Newcomer of the Week this season, joining three-time honoree Flora Bolonyai on the list. With 16 goals to date, Rosenthal is USC's highest scoring freshman, leading a group of strong newcomers. USC's freshmen and sophomores have combined for almost half the Trojans' scoring this year.
Rosenthal and the Trojans are now prepping for the coming MPSF Tournament, where there's a chance to secure an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Holding a 16-5 overall record, USC will be the No. 5 seed in the MPSF tourney, going up against No. 4 UCLA at 3 p.m. on the first day of action -- April 29 -- in San Jose, Calif.
