LOS ANGELES - Mark Haddow went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI Tuesday as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos beat the USC Trojans, 5-2, in non-conference action at Dedeaux Field. The win gave the Gauchos the two-game series sweep for the season.
Nick Loredo got the win for UCSB (10-6) with three designated innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Greg Davis earned his third save of the season with two scoreless innings while Nick Caputo rolled up three no-hit innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
Ben Mount took the loss for USC (8-13) after giving up four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Ricky Oropesa had his third three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4.
Derek Eligio and Sean Williams hit back-to-back single off Mount in the first before Haddow delivered a two-run double to left center for the 2-0 Gauchos' lead. USC scored its first run in the second when Kevin Roundtree singled to right to score Alex Glenn.
After Mount walked Williams in the third, Haddow belted a two-run homer to left center to knock out Mount for the 4-1 advantage. USC added another run in the third and put runners at second and third with two outs in the seventh, but Connor Whalen struck out pinch-hitter Mike Greco looking to halt the Trojan threat. UCSB would add an insurance run in the ninth.
The Trojans open Pac-10 Conference play this weekend against No. 24 UCLA, Friday-Sunday (March 25-27). Friday and Saturday's games start at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live through a video webcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
