Senior Lyndsay DePaul registered the top morning swim in the 100y fly to lead a Trojan contingent of four `A' finalists and three `B' finalists - and a top-seeded relay - during Day Two prelim action at the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Texas' Jamail Swim Center in Austin on Friday (March 18).
USC's 200y medley relay of Senior Presley Bard, freshman Kasey Carlson, DePaul and sophomore Christel Simms opened things with a wire-to-wire win (1:36.49) in the first of three heats, shaving 0.62 off the three-week old school record of 1:37.11 and making the Trojans the top seed in the championship final. Troy was 11th in the race last year.
A day after winning the 200y IM for her first NCAA title, junior Katinka Hosszu came back to qualify for the 400y IM final with the second-fastest morning time (4:03.09). She led a trio of Trojans who earned second swims in the event. Freshman Stina Gardell (4:07.31) and sophomore Haley Anderson (4:09.29) were 10th and 15th, respectively, to earn berths in the `B' final. Anderson's swim was especially noteworthy as she registered a PR in her first postseason swim in the event. Florida's Elizabeth Beisel is the top seed ion the event (4:02.34).
DePaul, the top seed in the 100y fly entering the meet, held onto that distinction after prelims, her 51.71 the fastest morning swim by 0.20. She was third in the final heat midway through the race but responded with fastest final 25 yards to claim the race.
Sophomore Yumi So earned her second career NCAA `B' final by tying for 14th with a 52.71, tying her PR. She was a 200y fly `B' finalist last year. So also swam in the 100y back in prelims, taking 31st overall (53.87).
Carlson, fifth in the 50y free Thursday, earned her second NCAA finals berth in as many days after qualifying with the third fastest time in the 100y breast in 59.29. Minnesota senior Jillian Tyler was first (58.48) and Texas A&M freshman Breeja Larson was second (59.03).
Bard qualified for her third consecutive NCAA 100y back final with the fifth fastest prelim time (52.38). The swim came after she broke her school record in the 100y back Thursday night in the leadoff of USC's second-place 400y medley relay. Cal's Deborah Roth was the top seed (51.61), 0.01 ahead of Bard's school record last night.
Sophomore Jessica Schmitt posted a PR in the 400y IM (4:10.86), almost earning a second swim in 19th. Other Trojan finishers in prelims included freshman Meghan Hawthorne in the 400y IM (4:13.01), junior Tanya Krisman in the 100y fly (34th, 53.70), junior Amanda Smith in the 200y free (29th, 1:46.64) and Simms in the 100y back (44th, 54.38).
**Junior Victoria Ishimatsu did not complete the 3-meter competition after hitting her heels on the board during her fourth dive in prelims. She is expected to compete on platform Saturday.
