Junior Katinka Hosszu won her third race in as many days while sophomore Haley Anderson won her second distance title to cap a fantastic four days for No. 6 USC on the final day of the Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
USC, which also sent six other swimmers and divers to the finals Saturday, including a second place from senior Lyndsay DePaul, finished third in the team standings (1309.5). Stanford (1567.5) passed Cal (1545.5) on the final day for the title. UCLA was fourth (1099.5), with Arizona fifth (874), ASU sixth (780), Washington State seventh (297) and Oregon State eighth (289).
The Trojans won eight titles, one off the school record for Pac-10 wins in a season (nine, 2003).
Hosszu was named Pac-10 Swimmer of the Meet after becoming the first Trojan to win three events at the Pac-10s since Kaitlin Sandeno and Blythe Hartley both did it in 2003. Junior diver Victoria Ishimatsu earned Diver of the Meet honor for the second year in a row after a pair of springboard titles and another final appearance on platform. Harrison Jones, competing in the Pac-10 Men's Diving Championships held concurrently with the women, earned Men's Pac-10 Diver of the Meet honors after a win on 1-meter and strong performances on 3-meter and platform.
"Despite the fact that we came up short in the team championship, the Trojans distinguished themselves with eight individual titles, along with Swimmer of the Meet honors and both Diver of the Meet honors," Salo said. "It was a tough meet for us because there has been a focus this year on being prepared to have a strong NCAA Championship this year - but the women rose to the occasion to be the best they could be. We have two weeks to fine-tune our team for the NCAA meet and I am sure the women are ready to close out the season with a strong Trojan effort.
"Katinka was outstanding this weekend and was right on her best times - she knows she can be faster at NCAAs. We are proud of Tori's performance this weekend. She is solid as a rock.
"Presley Bard's anchor leg in the 400 free relay was outstanding and I think she gained a ton of confidence with the result. Lyndsay and Haley again were very consistent in their Pac-10 swims and are eager to convert these swims to big swims at NCAA Championships."
Anderson repeated as 1650y free champion with a dominating win, finishing in 15:55.88, almost five seconds ahead of Stanford senior Kelsey Ditto (16:00.62). Anderson, who won the 500y free on Thursday, opened up almost a two-second lead after 200 yards and, led by more than three seconds at 500 yards and by almost four seconds at 1000. Her title was USC's seventh in the event at Pac-10s.
Hosszu and DePaul finished 1-2 in the 200y fly. Hosszu won the race in 1:51.85 (close to her school record 1:51.45) while DePaul was second in 1:54.03. Cal junior Sara Isakovic led the race at the halfway point by a slight margin with Hosszu in second. But Hosszu took over first with 50 yards to go and covered the final 50 yards more than a second faster than anyone else.
"I think the whole team did really well this meet and we are ready for the NCAAs," Hosszu said. "The last session of the meet is always very tough but we had some good swims in the morning and in the evening as well. I'm happy with my 200 fly and that Lyndsay and I finished top two tonight."
Ishimatsu, after wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards, finished a career-best fourth on platform in 265.60. Equally impressive was the performance by senior Christine Petrilli. A third-place finisher on platform as a 2008 freshman, she missed 2009 with a neck injury and didn't compete on platform in 2010. But she qualified for the platform final after finishing sixth in prelims and was eighth in the final (208.95).
Sophomore Jessica Schmitt reached her second final of the meet, taking eighth in the 200y breast in 2:11.11. Freshman Stina Gardell was eighth in the race (2:12.74, season-best) in her third final of the meet.
Senior Presley Bard reached her second straight final, finishing sixth in the 200y back in 1:55.75. Stanford's Maya DiRado won the race (1:53.04).
USC's 400y free relay of Carlson, DePaul, Hosszu and Bard was fourth in 3:16.54. Cal won the race in 3:13.59.
Senior Ellie Doran finished 10th in the 1650y free (16:36.80) while freshman Lynette Lim was 14th (16:47.49) and sophomore Chelsea Wild was 19th (17:06.39).
Freshman Kasey Carlson, after trips to the final in the 50y free and 100y breast, finished 12th in the 100y free (49.75). The 100y free was only the second event in which a Trojan didn't make the final. Sophomore Kate Shumway tied for 18th in a season-best 50.50.
Freshman Meghan Hawthorne, a two-time finalist in the medley events, won the `C' final of the 200y back in 1:57.73 (PR). Junior Ania Kowalczyk (2:15.37), sophomore Jordan Danny (2:15.71) and junior Ella Kidron (2:18.16), finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively.
Junior Tanya Krisman won the consolation final of the 200y fly (1:57.69) while sophomore Yumi So was 11th (1:58.08) and junior Amanda Smith was 13th (1:59.07).
