Live Texas Invitational Results
Senior Katinka Hosszu and sophomores Kasey Carlson and Dimitri Colupaev all set school records, as did the men's 400y medley relay, to highlight a strong first day at the 2011 Texas Invitational on Thursday (Dec. 1) in Austin, Texas.
Troy's women's 200y free relay of Carlson, juniors Christel Simms and Lindsay Parrish and senior Amanda Smith led off the evening session for USC by taking fourth in 1:29.75, good for an NCAA `B' cut and just 0.42 from the school record. Carlson led off the race with a 22.22, a season-best at the time.
USC's men's 200y free relay of sophomores Vladimir Morozov, Colupaev and Jack Wagner and senior Jeff Daniels won in 1:17.85, less then a second off the school record and just off an NCAA `A' cut. Morozov opened the race with a 19.42, also just short of an NCAA `A' cut in the 50y free, something he'd achieve later in the night.
Junior Haley Anderson battled her sister, Alyssa -- a senior at Arizona -- in the 500y free and finished second in the duel in 4:38.73 to her sibling's 4:36.78. USC's Anderson was not far off her PR of 4:37.92, set at last year's NCAA Championship and the time was 0.27 off an NCAA `A' cut. Smith took fifth in the race in 4:42.64, a solid `B' cut. Sophomore Lynette Lim was 11th with a `B' cut of 4:45.22.
Junior Yumi So next took fourth in the 100y fly in 52.67, improving on her NCAA `B' cut, 0.65 from an `A' cut. Senior Tanya Krisman, in the B final, clocked a 52.83 to take first and posting an NCAA `B'. Sophomores Stina Gardell (52.86), Meghan Hawthorne (53.48) and Simms (54.16) also posted NCAA `B' cuts in the race.
Sophomore Chase Bloch took second in the men's 100y fly in 46.83, a strong NCAA `B' cut and 0.79 off the `A' standard. Freshman Chad Bobrosky followed with a second place in the 500y free in 4:18.65, another solid `B' cut, just under three seconds off the `A' time.
Hosszu won a packed 200y IM (one of three events in which she won NCAA and Pac-10 titles in last year) by shattering her school record with a 1:52.71 (more than three seconds ahead of the `A' standard), erasing her mark of 1:53.39 set last year. Stanford All-American Maya DiRado was second (1:54.46). Trojan sophomore Meghan Hawthorne clocked a strong 1:57.96 (`B') for fourth. Gardell won the B final in 1:56.67 (`B', just off the `A' cut) while junior Jessica Schmitt (1:59.68), So (2:00.57) and junior Jordan Danny (2:01.15) also clocked `B' times.
The Trojans put three men into the 200y IM final with Colupaev taking third (1:44.10) with a time that broke Dave Wharton's 1989 record of 1:44.70 - by far the oldest record in the books. Junior Alex Lendrum also went under the old record with a 1:44.50 (and went 1:44.42 in prelims) for fourth while sophomore Jack Wagner was sixth (1:47.69). All times were NCAA `B' cuts.
Carlson broke her record in the 50y free in the 22.10, good for second place behind Arizona's Margo Geer (22.02) and just ahead of Stanford's Sam Woodward (22.13). Carlson's record was 22.13 set last year and was just off an `A' cut.
Morozov won the men's 50y free in 19.35 to notch the men's team's first `A' cut this season. Senior Jeff Daniels was sixth (19.94) to improve his NCAA `B' cut.
The women's 400y medley relay of Simms, Carlson, So and Hosszu was nipped by Arizona (1:31.65) and took second in an NCAA `A' 3:31.92.
The men's 400y medley relay also was second with an NCAA `B' cut of 3:08.47, the quartet of Lendrum, Colupaev, Bloch and Morozov breaking Troy's record of 3:09.26 set last year.
The meet continues Friday and Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. (CST).
