Sophomore Haley Anderson won a pair of races while senior Lyndsay DePaul, juniors Katinka Hosszu and Victoria Ishimatsu and freshman Kasey Carlson all won one event, but the No. 3 USC women's swimming and diving team still fell at No. 4 California, 182-118.
USC suffered its first loss on the season and dropped to 8-1, 2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal improved to 5-0, 3-0.
Said USC fifth-year head coach Dave Salo: "We got beat by a strong and prepared Cal team. We look to regroup and step up better against (No. 1) Stanford. We have a young squad that relied a little too heavy on senior leadership - and they ran out of gas."
Cal opened the meet with a half-second win in the 400y medley relay, taking the race in 3:36.36 to USC's 3:36.85. USC's relay consisted of senior Presley Bard, Carlson, DePaul and Hosszu.
Anderson followed that with her first victory of the day, claiming the 1000y free in 9:50.13 with a 12-second cushion. USC freshman Lynette Lim was fourth (10:07.98).
Hosszu next won the 200y free in 1:47.70, edging Cal's Sara Isakovic (1:48.21). Trojan freshman Stina Gardell was fourth (1:49.48).
The Bears finished 1-2 in the 100y back with Cindy Train (54.28) and Deborah Roth (55.12) with Bard taking third (55.61) and sophomore Yumi So in fifth (56.05).
Carlson won the 100y breast in 1:01.04, edging Cal stalwart Caitlin Leverenz's 1:01.16. Trojan sophomore Jessica Schmitt took third (1:02.99) while junior teammate Ania Kowalczyk was fourth (1:03.62).
DePaul won her event in the 200y fly, touching in 1:55.92, almost two seconds ahead of Cal's second-place Amanda Sims (1:57.67). Trojan junior Amanda Smith was fourth (2:01.00).
Cal swept the top three spots in the 50y free. Sophomore Kate Shumway was USC's top finisher in the race at 24.07.
In concurrent diving, Ishimatsu won the 1-meter with 305.03 and was third on 3-meter 287.25. Junior Michela Fossati-Bellani was fifth in both with a 240.68 in 1-meter and a 249.38 on 3-meter.
Back in the pool, Cal's Liv Jensen, who ran away with the 50y free, had to fight off USC's Carlson, 49.87 to 50.13, to win the 100y free. The Bears then swept the top three spots in the 200y back, led by Roth's 1:59.10. Hosszu was USC's top finisher in the race, taking fourth in 2:00.66.
Leverenz won one of her specialties, the 200y breast, in 2:10.89. Schmitt was second (2:15.63) and Gardell was third with a season-best and NCAA `B' cut of 2:15.65.
Anderson won her second event, the 500y free, in 4:50.37, bettering Cal's Katie Kastes (4:51.79) while Lim took fifth for USC (4:56.52).
Sims outdueled DePaul in the 100y fly, edging USC's record holder in the event 52.92 to 52.96. So took third (54.54). Leverenz won again in the 200y IM (1:58.97), downing USC's Gardell (2:00.95) and Hosszu (2:00.97) in the process. For Gardell, who joined USC in January, it was a season-best effort.
USC finished third in the 200y free relay, the unit of Carlson, DePaul, So and Anderson swimming a 1:33.16. Cal's `A' team won the race in 1:31.68.
The Trojans will swim at top-ranked Stanford on Saturday at 1 p.m.
