
No. 10 USC Sweeps New Mexico In Honolulu

HONOLULU -- Junior middle blocker Lauren Williams (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS) had a team-high 12 kills Friday as the No. 10 USC Women of Troy swept the New Mexico Lobos, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20), in Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic action.
Williams hit .450 on the night (12-3-20) and finished with a career-high five assists while adding a season-high six blocks.
Junior All-American Alex Jupiter had 10 kills, seven digs and three solo blocks for USC (4-0). Junior setter Kendall Bateman finished with 32 assists, nine digs and three blocks as the Trojans hit .347 in the match.
Lisa Meeter led New Mexico (2-3) with 12 kills and 12 digs, hitting .321 (12-3-28).
Rhoades hit the overpass to make it a 6-2 lead for the Lobos in the first set. After Lauren Williams hit the sideout kill for the Women of Troy, Jupiter's service ace sparked a run of six straight points as USC took the 8-6 lead. Williams went back-to-back terminations to push the advantage to five points, 16-11. Taylor Hadfield brought the Lobos back as USC used a timeout, still leading by a 20-18 score. Jupiter came out of the break with a kill as the Trojans finished with a 5-1 run to take the first set.
USC had a 4-1 lead in the second set, but New Mexico used three kills and a block assist from Rhoades for a 6-1 run and the 8-5 lead. The Trojans came back to tie it at 10-10 on Zoe Garrett's kill and three Lobo errors led to a 15-13 USC lead at the media timeout. Jupiter recorded a solo block to make it 19-16 for the Trojans. After a UNM timeout, the Trojans added two more points on Geena Urango's ace and another Jupiter solo block. Jupiter's third solo block of the set paved the win for the 2-0 lead in the match as the Women of Troy posted a .385 clip in the set against just two hitting errors.
The Trojans led by six, 9-3, to start the third set, but the Lobos would come back and get within one at 13-12. Falyn Fonoimoana kept the Lobos from tying the set and, with two kills from freshman Alexis Olgard, USC would go on to secure the sweep.
The tournament continues tomorrow as USC plays Michigan State at 5 p.m. Honolulu time with live stats available online (sidearmstats.com/hawaii/wvball).
Notes: USC is 4-1 all-time against New Mexico with the previous meeting coming in 1994...the middle blocking trio of Lauren Williams, Zoe Garrett and Alexis Olgard figured for 21 kills and only three errors combined.
