
No. 7 USC Sweeps Cal State Bakersfield

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana had 14 kills Saturday as the No. 7 USC Women of Troy swept the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-21), in day two action at the Fresno State Invitational. Fonoimoana hit .360 for the match (14-5-25).
USC improved to 9-0 on the season and hit .277 as a team. Freshman middle blocker Alexis Olgard had eight kills with three aces and three blocks while hitting .389 (8-1-18). Junior setter Kendall Bateman had 30 assists, five digs and three blocks for the Women of Troy.
The Trojans raced out to a 15-2 start in the match as they scored 10 straight points on Erin Yoder's serve. Olgard closed out the set with a kill. CSUB took a lead in the second set, but USC broke away after an 11-11 score. Sara Shaw and Olgard teamed up for a block, giving USC the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Roadrunners led by three at 14-11 in the third set as USC called a timeout. Olgard served up back-to-back aces gave them the lead at 16-15. Fonoimoana gave USC match point with a kill and a Roadrunner attack error gave another sweep for the Women of Troy.
USC concludes tournament play with a 5 p.m. match against Sacramento State.
