WESTCHESTER, CALIF. - The No. 4 USC men's water polo team served up a second-half shutout against its host on Sunday afternoon, taking down No. 8 Loyola Marymount 10-5 in Westchester, Calif. Another strong offensive game from Jeremy Davie, who notched his second straight hat trick of the weekend, was paired with a strong defensive stand by the Trojans thanks in large part to 10 saves from goalie Joel Dennerley. The win puts USC at 4-0 in this early stage of the 2010 season.
The first half was a fairly tight affair, although USC was effective in its 6-on-5 opportunities. The Lions took a 5-4 lead late in the half, only to see Peter Kurzeka level the match with a second to go when he converted on one final USC 6-on-5 to close the half at 5-5.
USC would sturdy up its defense from there, however, while the offense plugged in five more goals to finish out the game on a 9-2 run that wrapped up the 10-5 road win for the Trojans.
Kurzeka and Jeremy Davie each had a hat trick in the game to lead the Trojan charge. USC's players of the game were: Tobias Preuss, Joel Dennerley, Peter Kurzeka, Jeremy Davie and Nikola Vavic.
USC's next competition takes the Trojans to Berkeley next weekend for the Northern California Tournament.
