LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's soccer team outplayed visiting No. 21 Auburn, but held back its heroics until overtime of today's game in the Trojan Invitational at McAlister Field. After scoreless regulation play in which the Women of Troy had the Tigers doubled up in the shooting column, freshman Haley Boysen broke through with her first career goal as a Trojan to net a 1-0 win for USC early in the first overtime period. The victory improves USC to 3-1-2 overall and moves No. 21 Auburn to 4-2.
In the first game of the Trojan Invitational today, Northern Arizona beat Cal State Fullerton 3-2. Action switches up on Sunday (Sept. 12) with Cal State Fullerton facing Auburn at 11 a.m. at McAlister Field, followed by USC squaring off against NAU at approximately 1:30 p.m.
USC put Auburn on its heels early in the match with Courtney Garcia snapping a header to Tigers goalkeeper Amy Howard. That was the first of eight USC shots against Auburn in the half as Howard picked up three saves in the frame on stops against a Megan Ohai blast and a header from Autumn Altamirano. Auburn managed just four shots in the first half of play, forcing a single save out of USC freshman goalkeeper Shelby Church.
The scoreless first half gave way to even more pressure from the USC attack against the Tiger back line, serving up 10 shots in the half. Boysen caused early trouble while Ashli Sandoval also delivered some close calls to the Auburn goal. Meanwhile, USC's defensive corps was clearing away Auburn's sparse chances. Karter Haug and Claire Schloemer kept the center clear, while Mia Bruno and Morgan Morrow controlled the wings. Auburn had a couple chances on corner kicks, but the USC defense reigned supreme with Church making three more saves in facing five Auburn shots in the second half.
Still, regulation passed without a score, bringing up USC's third overtime game of the season. The Trojans made sure to shut things down early for this one. USC went on the fast attack, with Garcia creating a look and Boysen finishing off the opportunity in the box, slamming home the winner at the 91:01 mark of the match. Boysen becomes the third Trojan to score this season in notching USC's third win of the year. Both goalkeepers finished with four saves in the match, and teams were even with four corner kicks apiece. The numbers that leaned heavily in USC's favor were the shots, as the Trojans out-shot the Tigers 19-9 overall on the way to the 1-0 overtime win.
