Two days after taking the 100-meter breast crown, former USC All-American and current assistant coach Rebecca Soni turned to her bread and butter - the 200m breast - and demolished the field en route to another title on final night of the 2010 U.S. Summer Nationals at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center on Saturday (Aug. 7).
Soni, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the event and the American record holder, won the race in 2:21.60, just off her top time of the year (2:21.41) and almost five seconds fastest than second-place Amanda Beard.
Her pair of wins locked up a place on the U.S. national team that will compete at the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships.
Joining Soni on the U.S. team will be sophomore-to-be Haley Anderson, who placed third Saturday in the 800m free in 8:32.80. She competed for the U.S. at the 2009 World Championships and at the 2010 Open Water World Championships.
Sophomore Alex Lendrum turned in a solid effort on Saturday, placing third in the `B' final of the 200m back in 2:01.10.
On Friday, junior Tanya Krisman was a finalist in the 200m fly, taking eighth in 2:04.14. She earned her spot in the final with a 2:10.79 in prelims.
Senior Lyndsay DePaul just missed out in a final spot in prelims, but won the `B' final with a blazing 2:09.30, which would have been fifth in the `A' final. Sophomore Yumi So also swam in the `B' final, taking eighth in 2:14.21.
The upcoming Pan Pacific Championships are slated for Aug. 18-22, also at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.
