Junior Katinka Hosszu won her third individual crown, sophomore Haley Anderson claimed her second and the men's 400y free relay - spearheaded by freshman Vladimir Morozov -- broke a 20-year record en route to a title to finish off in style the final day the 2010 U.S. AT&T Short Course National Championships at Ohio State's Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatics in Columbus on Saturday (Dec. 3).
Earlier this year, Morozov broke a 20-year school record in the 100y free. Today, he did it three more times, the final time leading off USC's 400y free relay. Morozov went 42.06 (NCAA `A'), the blistering time a perfect springboard for freshman Dimitri Colupaev, senior Emmett Walling and sophomore Patrick White, who all swam strong en route to a 2:51.58. The time was more than four seconds faster than second-place Ohio State and erased USC's old school record of 2:53.15, set in 1990.
Earlier in the day, Morozov finished third in the 100y free in 42.12 behind a pair of U.S. Olympians in Matthew Grevers (41.35) and American record holder Nathan Adrian (41.63). Morozov's prelim time was 42.46, which marked the first time he lowered his own 100y record (42.93) set in November.
Anderson kicked off the meet with a title in the 1650y, breaking a pair of school records in the process. She won the race in 15:48.64 (NCAA `A'), crushing the field and slicing 0.35 off of Kalyn Keller's 2004 record. Anderson's 1000-yard split of 9:32.96 also took care of Keller's 2004 mark of 9:34.72.
Senior Presley Bard, who won the 100y back on Friday, just missed a second title in the 200y back with a 1:52.70 (NCAA `A'), out-touched by Stephanie Proud (1:52.62). Trojan sophomore Alex Lendrum finished 10th in the men's 200y back in 1:44.58. He went 1:44.07 in prelims, an NCAA `B' cut.
Freshman Kasey Carlson was USC's top finisher in the 100y free, winning the consolation final in 48.86 (NCAA `B'). In addition to Morozov in the men's 100y, Colupaev took 14th (44.35), White was 16th (44.40) and Walling was 18th (45.06).
Sophomore Jessica Schmitt was fifth in the 200y breast (2:10.91), not far off an NCAA `A' cut, while Carlson was 12th in 2:11.06, a season-best an NCAA `B' cut. Senior Dillon Connolly won the consolation final of the 200y breast in 1:56.84 (NCAA `B').
Hosszu and senior Lyndsay DePaul, who won the 100y fly Friday, finished 1-2 in the 200y fly in a final heat that featured four Trojans. Hosszu won in 1:51.45, knocking off more than a second off her record of 1:52.52. DePaul neared the old mark with a 1:52.82. Both times were strong NCAA `A' cuts. Junior Tanya Krisman was seventh (1:55.63) while sophomore Yumi So was 10th (1:58.72). Krisman's time and So's 1:58.35 in prelims, were both NCAA `B' cuts and season bests.
Sophomore Justin DiFedrico was seventh in the men's 200y fly in 1:46.69, USC's top time of the year and an NCAA `B' cut.
USC's women's 400y free relay of Bard, DePaul, Hosszu and Carlson closed out the meet with another school record, taking second in 3:15.39, breaking the old mark of 3:16.22 set last spring. Cal won the race in 3:14.50.
"This was a great performance for the USC program," head coach Dave Salo said. "I'm really proud of the this team stepping up and putting up a strong performance. This group of athletes is focused on being one of the best teams in this country.
"Freshman Vladimir Morozov lived up to his billing today. He is clearly one of the best sprinters in the country and will be among the best in the world. The women's team, led by Bard, DePaul and Hosszu, are leading this squad through an awesome season. And to have a men's sprint relay dominate like it did tonight is incredible."
