EUGENE, ORE. - The No. 19 USC women's soccer team had another tough road game on its hands during a visit to Eugene to take on host Oregon in a Pac-10 matchup. The Trojans fell behind in the first half, but would make good on a late penalty kick converted by Ashli Sandoval to force the tie. The 1-1 draw against the Ducks moves USC to an 8-4-3 overall record and a 1-2-1 Pac-10 record, while Oregon goes to 4-7-3, 0-2-1.
USC earned a series of corner kick early in the match, but the Ducks were able to turn away the Trojan attacks during the first half. Despite six corner kicks from USC in the half, Oregon was the first to break through in the game when in the 30th minute, Oregon's top scorer got the Ducks on the board. Jen Stoltenberg got loose on the attack and took a quick and sharp shot on goal, putting it in to take Oregon ahead 1-0. USC's Carly Butcher took a whack at a shot toward the back post later in the half, but the Ducks had a defender at the ready to get a head on the ball and keep USC scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, USC and Oregon traded some dangerous opportunities. A handball by the Ducks inside the box set up USC with a penalty kick in the 69th minute. Karter Haug, who has put away a pair of penalty kicks during shootouts for the Trojans during her career, lined up to take the shot, but was just off the mark. Her penalty shot rattled off the post, and Oregon's 1-0 edge remained intact. Just over 10 minutes later, Haug helped USC get right back to that penalty hash. She sparked a USC attack by finding Autumn Altamirano for a through pass up to Haley Boysen. Boysen was taken out by Oregon goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee, and the Trojans set up for another penalty kick against the Ducks. Ashli Sandoval got the call, and put her shot away to the left to lock up the score 1-1 in the 81st minute.
USC caused some further trouble for the Ducks back line during overtime, while USC goalkeeper Shelby Church picked up three more saves in the next 20 minutes to hold the Trojans even with the Ducks and wrap up USC's third tie of the year with the 1-1 final.
