
Men's Volleyball Is Swept At Pepperdine

The No. 4-ranked USC men's volleyball team had its 5-match early-season winning streak snapped as it got swept at No. 3 Pepperdine, 30-28, 30-24, 30-19, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Jan. 30).
The Trojans dropped to 5-2 overall and took their first MPSF loss to fall to 2-1 in league. Pepperdine remained undefeated in 2009, upping his overall mark to 6-0 and its MPSF record to 5-0.
Pepperdine blocked the Trojans off the court, holding an 18.5-4.5 edge in that category. The Waves hit .260 in the match to USC's .148.
Tony Ciarelli led USC with 12 kills, while Austin Zahn added 10 kills (hitting .391) with 7 blocks and Sean Dennis had 11 digs and 3 blocks.
For Pepperdine, Paul Carroll had 14 kills (hitting .333) and 7 blocks, Casey Krider had 11 digs and 6 blocks while dishing out 34 assists, Cory Riecks had 11 kills, Tyler Jaynes contributed 8 blocks and Rodnei Santos added 7 blocks.
The first set was tied at 26-26 before the Waves scored the next 2 points to take control. The second set was knotted at 21-21, then the Waves slowly pulled away by scoring 9 of the final 12 points. Pepperdine took over the final set early, pulling away from a 9-9 tie and then allowing USC to score only 4 of the set's last 16 points.
USC returns to action with a pair of MPSF home matches against No. 9 BYU, on Friday (Feb. 6) at 7 p.m. and on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 7:30 p.m. Both matches are in the Galen Center.
