Led by three-time academic honoree Veronika Bartunkova, the USC women's water polo team has landed four student-athletes on the list of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Academic All-MPSF Scholar-Athletes for 2008. For their strong cumulative GPAs at Troy, USC seniors Veronika Bartunkova, Whitney Morgan and Julie Spataru and sophomore Alexandra Kiss have earned academic honors from the conference.
Spataru, who has twice been selected to the All-MPSF Academic list, boasts the team's top GPA. She recently finished her communications and psychology degrees holding a 3.69 GPA. A team captain in 2008, Spataru scored 13 goals for the Trojans in her senior season to round out a career 24.
Bartunkova has racked up three academic awards from the MPSF during her Trojan career, holding a 3,07 GPA as an international relations major. With 50 goals scored in her senior season to finish as the team's second leading scorer, Bartunkova was named to the All-MPSF First Team and closed out her USC career with 106 goals to her name.
Another USC senior, goalie Whitney Morgan, caps off her Trojan playing days as an All-MPSF Academic Scholar-Athlete. The kinesiology major holds a 3.01 GPA and accumulated 402 saves in the cage for the Women of Troy.
Eligible for All-MPSF Academic honors this season, sophomore Alexandra Kiss has also joined the list of MPSF Scholar-Athletes with her 3.02 GPA. She was third on the team in scoring with 36 goals to give her a total of 72 goals in her two seasons so far at Troy.
The MPSF awards Academic All-MPSF recognition to scholar-athletes who have received a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. Athletes must also be at least a sophomore academically, have completed one full academic year at their institution prior to this season of competition and have competed in at least 50 percent of their institution's competition during the season.
