The No. 13 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team--behind Jeff Menzel's 21 kills--upset No. 10 USC, 30-25, 30-23, 30-27, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Santa Barbara on Wednesday (March 12).
The Gauchos improved to 8-11 overall, while USC lost its fourth consecutive match to drop to 9-12. Both squads are tied in the MPSF with 6-9 records.
Menzel hit .529 as UCSB hit at a .366 pace. Teammate Theo Bruner had 9 kills and Matt Thobe had 6 blocks.
The Gauchos outblocked USC, 12.0 to 3.0. USC, which hit just .178, served 7 aces.
For the Trojans, C.J. Schellenberg had 14 kills and Juan Figueroa added 10 kills. Each had 2 aces. Luke Morris had a match-best 10 digs.
USC next hosts an alumni match this Saturday (March 15) at 3 p.m. in the Galen Center.
