Kasey Johnson, Lawrence Jackson and Matt Sagehorn today (Nov. 26) were selected as USC's Wells Fargo Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 19-25.
Kasey Johnson, a freshman defender, scored the only goal and her first career goal in USC's 1-0 NCAA third-round win against Florida on Nov. 24 to propel the Trojans into the Elite Eight. She also was a big part of the Trojans' defensive effort which posted their third straight shutout in the NCAA Tournament.
Senior defensive end Lawrence Jackson set USC game records with 5.5 tackles for a loss and four sacks in the football team's 44-24 win at Arizona State on Thanksgiving. For his efforts, Jackson was named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week and the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week.
Matt Sagehorn, a sophomore driver on the men's water polo team, led USC in scoring with a hat trick in all three games at the MPSF Tournament this weekend to lead USC to the title. That extends his double-digit scoring streak to 10 consecutive matches, giving Sagehorn 29 goals in this second half of the 2007 season for a current season total of 35 to lead the Trojans. Sagehorn opened the tournament with three goals against UC Santa Barbara in the first round, then matched that in the win over Stanford in the semifinals. In the MPSF championship match, Sagehorn had two early goals to help USC move ahead of UC Irvine in the first, then added his third late in the game to secure victory for the Trojans in their fifth MPSF Tournament title.
