Dejan Cvetkovic Advances To Sherwood Singles Final

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- USC junior Dejan Cvetkovic secured himself a place in Monday's singles championship match with a decisive semifinal win on Sunday at the Sherwood Cup. Cvetkovic downed Pepperdine's James Lemke 6-2, 6-3 for his fourth consecutive straight-set win in the tournament. He will square off against UCLA's Haythem Abid on Monday at 11 a.m. in the championship match. In the consolation final, two Trojans will square off, as Jason McNaughton and Chong Wang have worked their way through the back draw to reach the consolation final match.
It was almost an all-USC singles championship match as well, as Trojan senior Kaes Van't Hof was up against Abid in the other semifinal. Van't Hof pulled double duty on Sunday, also playing in the doubles semifinals with teammate Robert Farah. The USC doubles duo of Van't Hof and Farah was up against top-seeded UCLA pair Grundler/Kohlloefl in the semis, but fell 8-2 to the Bruins. In his singles semifinal, Van't Hof fell 6-3, 6-1 to Abid.
After first-round losses in the main draw, McNaughton and Wang both have pinned up four straight wins in the back draw to reach Monday's final -- also set for 11 a.m. McNaughton beat Boise State's Blake Boswell 6-3, 6-1 and then UCLA's Andrew Eklov 7-6, 6-4 to reach the final against Wang. Wang pulled out two tiebreaker wins on Sunday to move into the final. The USC sophomore topped UCLA's Phillip Gruendler 6-1, 2-6 (10-5) and then downed Bruin Mike Look 5-7, 6-3 (10-8).
USC begins team play next week, hosting LMU and Cal Poly for a dual match doubleheader on Jan. 20 at Marks Stadium.
